Each year, thousands of turtles are killed on highways in Massachusetts as they are moving between wetlands or seeking a nest site. In the context of a MassDOT-MassWildlife inter-agency agreement, the two agencies have initiated a Turtle Road-Crossing Study to identify, monitor, and upgrade “hotspot” crossing locations across the Commonwealth. As a first step, the agencies have identified a list of sites for immediate attention and are evaluating cost-effective ways to reduce the number of turtles killed on Massachusetts highways.

More importantly, volunteers are needed to identify, monitor, and report turtle road-crossing hotspots. Please consider volunteering to monitor a road-crossing hotspot in 2012.
